Tony met with Bethany and David Grint just after lunch on November third. They were at a television studio in Long Island City, though Tony was a bit disappointed to see that it looked like every other bland office he’d ever been in: beige walls and bland offices. He’d been half expecting movie sets, or at least a studio or two.

Bethany appeared exactly as he’d expected based on their previous phone calls: a short blond woman in her forties, conservatively dressed, and smiling brightly. David was her opposite: tall and lanky, his glasses making him seem even older, though Tony suspected they were about the same age. He shook their hands, smiling easily.

“It’s great to finally meet you,” David said. He was cheerful enough, though he seemed tired. “I just flew in from LA last night, so I hope you’ll forgive the jetlag.”

Bethany led them down a hallway and into a conference room, already occupied by two men in suits. She introduced them as Jonathan and Mark, two of the executives from the studio.

“Have you had a chance to consider the Harmony in the Halls project further?” Bethany asked, jumping right to it.

Tony settled into his seat and folded his hands. “I did, though I’ll admit that I still have a few reservations.” The contract that Bethany had sent him had been unsurprising, and didn’t seem to deviate much from what he’d seen with Broadway productions. He’d met with his lawyer to go over it, and everything had seemed in order. “However, I’m mostly concerned about this morality clause.”

Mark cleared his throat. “As I’m sure Bethany told you, we’re a family-friendly station. All of our programming is created with children and youths in mind, and we have a reputation as a provider of quality entertainment. So we want to protect that reputation, and ensure that everyone from our actors to our crew are projecting the right image.”

It sounded good, of course, but Bethany’s words from their phone call lingered like a sour taste on the back of his tongue. Tony’s lawyer hadn’t seemed concerned by the language, which he’d said was pretty standard for a children’s television station. But Tony had read and reread the clause.

. . . shall not commit any act which might bring Director into public disrepute, contempt, or scandal, or which might reflect unfavorably on the Network, paid sponsors, broadcasting stations, or any Network licensees, or to injure the success of the Series or other associated programs.

If it hadn’t been for Bethany’s speech, the way she’d hinted at morality and sin, Tony would have signed without hesitation.

“Well, it’s not like you have anything to worry about,” Bethany said, smiling. “I know the language in television contracts can be a bit confusing, given that you’re used to stage productions, but I’d be happy to have one of our lawyers contact you to review it further if you’d like.”

Jonathan shifted the conversation back to the show. “I have to admit, we’re thrilled to be having a director of your caliber coming on board.
